Whenever parents say this to me, I simply ask them to explore the question…”What are you doing with your time?”
Many answers are given however, if you look a little deeper there is always some wriggle room to be found, and it often comes down to the choices we’re making and how we’re spending our precious resource of ‘time’.
Meditation doesn’t have to involve hours each day, 5 or 10 minutes is enough to practice focusing on deep, mindful breaths. If you find your mind wanders (and it will) simply return to your breath – time and time again.
I have found myself taking a lot more deep breaths lately. Some of them when I’m feeling overwhelmed, some because I’ve realised I’ve been holding my breath for a long time, and some of them to release whatever happened during the day before I go to sleep.
Practising meditation doesn’t mean you won’t be triggered by certain people or circumstances, instead it allows you to recognise these feelings, to acknowledge and honour them – instead of trying to ignore or distract yourself away from them – accepting them wholly and completely. As I sit with each mindful breath, I begin to feel rested and rebalanced once again.
Mindful breathing is easy and you can practice it anywhere. All you need to do is carve out a little ‘time’ each day, then you can get on with your life as a busy parent – with a bit more peace, clarity and ease.
